Howard Barker’s 1990 tragedy of female heroism and sexual desire, re-tells the Biblical story of Judith as a duel of power games and seduction that spirals out of control, and where personal morality is sacrificed for political interests On the eve of a destructive battle against the people of Israel, Judith sets out to seduce and kill their enemy’s general. But a game of challenge and counter-challenge develops, in which she ultimately falls victim to her own desires.

ABOUT THE COMPANY:
Judith: A Parting From The Body is the second production by Rough Readings, a theatre company devoted to the work of contemporary European playwrights.

Director Teunkie van der Sluijs (Netherlands, 1981) is a training theatre director at Rose Bruford College and a former student and theatre practice tutor at the University of Amsterdam. He has worked as an actor in theatre and on national television in the Netherlands. His productions have toured in Europe and to North America and North Africa and in 2003 he won the Récherche Théatrâle Award at the Festivale Internationale in Monastir, Tunisia, the Arab theatre critics award for High Resolution ('This masters the vocabulary of theatrical depiction; it presents us a distinguished piece of artistic work' Le Temps).

Recent work includes productions of Abdelkader Benali’s Yasser for Rough Readings and Howard Barker’s The Love of a Good Man, and a commission by the Dutch Proms to direct new opera The Expected in Amsterdam’s esteemed music venue Paradiso in 2006.
